Out and about in the village with your dog
Mathildedal is an easy place to enjoy with your four-legged companions.
There are many dogs in the village, and they are welcome in most restaurants and cafés – if not indoors, then at least on the terrace.
“Dogs are always welcome on our terrace, and nowadays also inside on the glass terrace and in our lobby café,” says Maria Rantanen, entrepreneur at Mathildan Marina.
Dogs are always given fresh water and treats at the marina – something the village dogs have clearly noticed.
“Many people say they can’t pass by without stopping in for a quick treat,” Rantanen laughs.
In summer, dogs visiting the village can look forward to a new treat. Jonas Jokilehto, who runs the local food shop Puhti as well as Vuorovetten jäätelö ice cream kiosks, says they are currently testing recipes for a dog-friendly ice cream.
“We have three ice cream kiosks. Customers often want to buy ice cream for their dogs as well. That is why we wanted to start developing a dog-friendly version.”
The flavour of the ice cream is still a secret.
“We are still working on the flavours. As with all our products, the idea is to use ingredients from local producers,” Jokilehto says.
In the beautiful terrain of the national park, dogs of all sizes feel at home.
One particularly dog-friendly spot in the village is Restaurant Terho in the centre. On a Friday evening, there may be several dogs there, all getting along peacefully.
Dogs also play an important role on the menu – all the restaurant’s pizzas are named after dogs that have lived in the village.
Mathildedal and its surrounding area offer excellent terrain for exploring with dogs.
In the beautiful terrain of the national park, dogs of all sizes feel at home. Do remember, however, that the national park is a protected area and dogs must always be kept on a lead. Dog waste must also be cleaned up.
On a spring morning along the village street, Juha Ali-Melkkilä was spotted with his dogs Aikki and Sissi. Aikki is a white Swedish elkhound and Sissi is a Jämthund.
